When the creativity bug hits me, it hits me hard. For as long as I can remember I've loved to create. Whether it was painting, drawing, sculpting - you name it and I wanted to do it. I've always wanted a Wichita flag to put up on my wall, I just never found one I liked and didn't want the generic one everyone else had. So, in comes my idea to just create my own. After a lengthy and expensive trip to Hobby Lobby, I decided to create a metallic gold floral flag.

I thought I'd show my steps, so you could create your own. There is not limit to what you can do to put your own spin on our iconic Wichita symbol. Think of your own tastes, favorite colors and prints and put it to canvas. This is a really affordable and fun project to do. The canvas and paint was 50% off at Hobby Lobby, making my total for the project about $15.
The first step was to trace the outline of the flag. Being a perfectionist, this was the hardest task. I ended up using my projector to get the outlines just right. This was SO helpful because my canvas is on the larger side. After tracing, I used a ruler to create straight lines and then used painting tape to outline the outside chunks. To tape off the semi circles at the end of each chunk, I put the tape on top of the line I drew, traced that line and cut it out. This was the most tedious part of the project.

Then comes painting. I chose to use DecoArt Champagne Gold metallic paint. I did floral designs and filled in by the edges as much as possible to create more of a border for when I take the tape off. After letting those chunks dry, I took the tape off and went for the middle part. This was a harder part because I had to try my best to free-hand the circle and make it look as good as possible.
Below is the final product. I love how it turned out and couldn't wait to hang it up on my wall. It's unique, my style and exactly what I wanted.
